ÉVORA

The capital of Portugal's centre-south region, the Alentejo, land of wine and cork

About the tour

Évora is the capital of Portugal's centre-south region, the Alentejo. In the city's historic centre is the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also known as the Temple of Diana). Nearby, whitewashed houses surround Évora Cathedral, a huge Gothic structure begun in the 12th century. The Church of St Francis has Gothic and Baroque architecture, along with the Chapel of Bones.

Its well-preserved historic centre is one of Portugal's richest monuments, worthy of the epithet City Museum. In 1986, the city's historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

On this tour you can take a leisurely stroll through Évora's historic centre in Praça do Giraldo, an icon in honour of Geraldo Geraldes, the ‘Man Without Fear’, who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167. Visit Évora Cathedral, the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal and unrivalled in the rest of the country.

The Temple of Diana, one of the grandest and best preserved Roman temples in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. Also known as the Chapel of Bones, a spooky chapel completely decorated with human bones, it was built in the 17th century on the initiative of three Franciscan friars.

Cork factory

As Portugal is the world's largest producer of cork, you'll now be able to learn a little more about this material.

Leaving Évora, the tour continues to the Cork Factory in Azaruja, where you'll learn about this versatile and sustainable material, from which many different items are produced.

Wine Tasting

This will take place at a local winery, where you can learn about its history and wine production. This activity includes not only the wine tasting but also a visit to the winery where it will take place.

NOTE: This tour includes a transfer from Lisbon (about 45 to 50 minutes), wine tasting and a visit to the cork factory. It does not include lunch, tickets to monuments and extra tasting fees are at your own expense.
